"He does not know in advance what he is going to put on the canvas, nor does he decide what colors to use. He does not will to do anything, he does not seek to do anything. He allows his sensibilities a free rein, paints in a trance--a trance which has all the acuteness, the visual definiteness of dreams. His only care is to be faithful to what is given, to what is found, to paint what he sees." - Herbert Read "The Philosophy of Modern Art" | ||||||||

St. Louis, MO 63116
Photographs taken by Dana Smith between the years of 2004 - 2006.
These photos primarily deal with artists and musicians doing what they do best - performing, writing, recording and creating. All of these photos are of people I know and have tremendous respect for, not only as a person but also as an artist. They're the kind of people who don't fit neatly in with today's society. They follow their own rules and live by their own laws with creativity at their center. The people in these photographs run their own band, recording studio, art gallery, radio station, night club, record label or something else where there are no guide lines or how-to books. They learned how by actually doing it. These photos were not planned, preconceived or controlled in anyway. They were taken purely on the spur of the moment. No time to think, no time to focus, just point and shoot. Fleeting moments which no longer exist but continue to have a profound impact on me as an artist. In this collection you will see eleven 8 x 10 portraits of
Jim Atkinson at 3wk (radio station owner/program director - 3wk.com)
Erik Carlson at Mississippi Nights (writer/DJ)
Larissa Dalle at Radio Penny (songwriter/singer/piano player - The Wormwood Scrubs)
Jason Hutto at CBGB (songwriter/singer/guitar player/recording engineer - Walkie Talkie USA)
Riley at The Way Out Club (songwriter/singer/guitar player - The Dirty 30's)
Jeb in the Doxies living room (songwriter/singer/bass player - The Dirty 30's, Pizzasaurus Rex, Rock Solid)
Ben Hanna in his apartment (songwriter/singer/guitar player/record label - Grandpa's Ghost, Phosphorus Recordings)
Galen Gondolfi at Typo Café (artist/musician/gallery owner - Fort Gondo Compound for the Arts)
Sam Thompson at Off Broadway (musician/sound engineer - Off Broadway)
Brent and Bryan Maness at the Eastside Tavern (musicians - The Doxies)
Fred Friction at Frederick's Music Lounge (artist/musician/writer - MorganFLOORed - was previous owner of Frederick's Music Lounge and drummer for The Highway Matrons)
